Realize/Realise vs. Recognize

✍️ In today’s grammar, let’s look at the difference between “realize/realise” and “recognize“.

✍️ Let’s get started!

1. Realize/Realise

We use realize/ realise when we want to understand a situation, sometimes suddenly. (UK usually realise)
👉i.e. They didn’t realize the danger they were in.
👉i.e.”Do you realise (that) this is the third time you’ve forgotten?” she said angrily.
👉i.e. I realize how difficult it’s going to be, but we must try.

2. Recognize

We use recognize when we know someone or something because you have seen or heard him or her or experienced it before.
👉i.e. I hadn’t seen her for 20 years, but I recognized her immediately.
👉i.e. Do you recognize this song?
👉i.e. He put on a large hat and glasses as a disguise and hoped no one would recognize him.
